More Than Music: Why Content Creation Is Crucial for Every Artist

Updated: May 11

Creating content as an artist means more than just posting your finished pieces. It requires creating a narrative that invites your audience into your world, fosters genuine connection, and demonstrates both your creative process and your personality. A key to gaining loyal fans is sharing behind the scenes. It’s easy for listeners/viewers to generalize artists if they have similar music, but don’t show their experience. It’s important to show snapshots of your work in progress, whether it’s the first lines on a blank canvas or the strums of a new melody that may never make the final cut. These moments of vulnerability exemplify your craft and make followers feel invested in each step of YOUR journey.

It’s important to pair your visuals with brief explanations. Illustrate what inspired a particular piece you created, describe the challenges you overcame when making this piece, or reveal the emotion you hope to capture. Offer value by teaching how you make your art. Sharing authentic behind-the-scenes glimpses of your experience as an artist is eye catching. Whether it's a photo of your desk with your unfinished lyrics, a quick explanation of the tools you rely on, or a snapshot of an item that may fuel your art, these things may sound silly, but they do reinforce that there’s a real person behind the art, and that music is a process.

With content creation, consistency is crucial. Creating a realistic posting schedule is a great idea to keep yourself in check, ensuring online growth. Whether that’s twice weekly updates or daily check-ins, its crucial to honor it. Regular content tells your audience to look for your posts and signals social platforms to prioritize your page. Throughout your different forms of social media/media in general (which is highlighted on another post of mine), maintain a cohesive visual and verbal identity. Consistency with “little things” like filters, fonts, and tone is important. Everything should feel unmistakably you/your persona.

All in all, it's crucial to remember that content is a conversation, not just to market your work. Please invite feedback. Creating content as an upcoming artist means balancing authenticity with strategy. Show your process, tell your story, teach something useful, and keep your audience engaged. By doing so, you will build an audience that feels connected to both your art and the person behind it.
